Shooting Stars Don't Have the Answers

Sellotape won't hold my heart in place
Kissing you won't restore my faith
So why do I try? Why do I lie to myself?

Cause your pretty words won't linger on your lips for too long
Three minutes puts an end to your love songs
So why do I try? Why do I lie to myself?

I'm holding your hand in the hope that it will hold me together
When will I learn that I can't live leaning forever
On somebody else, somebody to love me for myself

Nice guys always come last, never first
Shoegazing never works
And shooting stars, they don't have the answers

The sky won't hold my hopes for me
Wishing on a star won't set me free
So why do I try? Why do I lie, to myself?

And I'm staring at the bottom of my teacup
Like it has the answers or can bring me luck
Why do I try? Why do I lie, to myself?

I'm holding your hand in the hope that it will hold me together
When will I learn that I can't live leaning forever
On somebody else, somebody to love me for myself

Nice guys always come last, never first
Shoegazing never works
And shooting stars, they don't have the answers

Sellotape won't hold my heart in place
Kissing you won't restore my faith
So why do I kiss you like it'll restore my faith in myself?

Gritty realism here, yet I can quite imagine you singing this to a jaunty tune to disguise the words you're saying. It has a good rhythmic feel to the lyrics and I feel this would work very well - one to be heard, for sure.

I particularly liked your language in the chorus:

Maybe we all do need some fantasy in our lives, but here you're recognising that it doesn't actually solve anything. I like this song both for its message and for the quality of the writing, which as ever is very high.

Hope to hear this one soon, Sarah. Is this on your site? Right now I haven't got the time or opportunity to check.

Phil :)

Phil,

I don't have a tune for this, therefore it's not recorded. I wrote it to a rhythm rather than a tune like I usually do, which is probably why you can identify the rhythm so clearly in these lyrics.
Gritty realism probably is a good description; with my recent break-up I've just realised a lot of things and I'm just wiser than I was in terms of relationships/people and that sort of thing. Hence the tone of the two recent songs I posted.

Thanks for your comments, I'll let you know if I get this one recorded.

Sarah,
I could have SWORN that I replied to this! How frustrating.
Anyhow,
you had me from the beginning with this
"Sellotape won't hold my heart in place
Kissing you won't restore my faith
So why do I try? Why do I lie to myself?"
I like the idea of sellotape and holding your heart in place. Would be a quick, easy and painless fix if it actually did work, but of course you shoot down the idea and go on to say that kissing won't restore faith. Wow. Love it, love it!

The repeating question you ask also works so well here. You go through scenerios and then repeat it once more. Sometimes that can get very old, but not here. You've used it wisely.

Ah. You are never a disappointment. :)

I too, very much liked the language in the chorus, as I did throughout the piece. Wishing on shooting stars may not bring answers, but damnit, wouldn't it be great if it did?? owell. Enjoyed the read, as always. - Lyly

I like the imagery here but also I like the feelings behind the
pressed words of ones love in disrepair.

I enjoyed this very much. Lyrics haven't been something I particularly got into until a friend of mine started recording her own songs. "Shoegazing" is a very original idea. It's a beautiful song with a sad ending.

This is so old!

I think this was me being quite brutely realistic. But nice guys must adapt, that's a shame....

Thanks for the blast from the past Pyro.
