I’ve been driving for an hour and a half. It’s a long drive from Jersey City to Philadelphia. Tonight the drive seems even longer.

It’s beginning to get dark now and I guess I should turn my headlights on. O. K., now that they’re on I can see much better.

There are sure a lot of cars on the road tonight. Most of them are probably commuters just like I am. Everyone seems to be in such a hurry to get home. The speed limit is 65, but I guess it’s a part of human nature to overlook rules and regulations.

Wow! That tractor-trailer must be going about 90. Tractor-trailers seem to travel much faster than they actually do.

Oh my God! There’s a poor devil who won’t make it home tonight. I suppose it can happen to anybody. I suppose it can.

Steak…she said we’re having steak tonight. I hope the potatoes aren’t burnt like they were last Thursday. When my parents come to our house next month, I want everything to be just perfect. I haven’t seen them for almost…yes, it must be six months. Boy, she better not burn anything then. She won’t.

Oh, no, what’s this? Another accident, damn it! I’m hungry, too. I wanna eat! Boy, that was an awfully small car. I’m glad I can’t see the driver. It would probably make me sick. But, I can’t see and I’m still hungry. Oh, but that car was brand new. It must have cost a pretty penny.

Next October we said, but I think we’ll need a new car by September. I’d never fork out the real big bucks for a car. It’s not worth it. I wouldn’t spend a red cent for a small car. Besides, she likes big cars.

Good, now I can begin to make some time. For Christ’s sake, it’s already six o’clock!

“Oh, I’m sorry officer, I didn’t realize that I was going that fast. Thanks for telling me.”

That’s a good one. Those staties must hear that everyday. But what the hell are six lane highways for and how many people really get stopped?

Can you imagine that? Over the side. Over the hill. Oh, his head’s bleeding. He’s crawling. The poor kid. I better…Jesus, it’s six thirty. I’m half an hour late already. I don’t have a badge anyway. It’s not my place to get involved. He looked like just a college kid. Oh, he’ll live, just a few scratches.

This baby’ll be Paul’s in September and I can commute in that old Toyota truck. Paul will need something while he’s at school. He’s not going to hitch hike on any interstate highway, that’s for sure! People drive crazy these days. She’d probably worry herself to death anyway.

Good, one more exit. One more mile.

Where’s this guy in front of me going – to a funeral? Move it, mister, I’m in a hurry! Oh, the hell with it, I’m passing him. I don’t have all night. There’s no one behind me.

Watch it! Oh, no…..oh God…!

Michael,

Lots of well written, though unwelcome, images in this piece. It is a tale told all too often. Thanks for sharing it with us and reminding us.

Wow! Well written, Michael, this rings too true. I have been taking the old highway on my commute to work every day, to avoid the daily rush hour accidents, and crazy driving on the freeway. We have become so calloused in this crazy commuting lifestyle.

Barbara, thank you and you’re welcome.

Mary Ann, we seem to get caught up in our own lives and our own selves that accidents seem to become things that happen “outside of our world”, so to speak.

Thanks for responding.
