Fry Two for Johnny

What is it with those old roads Johnny?
remember?
they both start with an M

I was driving it the other day when that song
came on the radio, the one I heard you bitching
about that morning you were medicated on Medica
road,

"That damn bitch better fry me more than one egg"
you said,
remember?

We had some good times Johnny even though people
said you were user, using people for what they had

It never bothered me you were like a brother
Hell! you had lots of brothers and sisters
Paul, Phil, Jerry, Alex, Cathy

I can't recall so long ago
remember?

sitting in my green 56' chevy in your driveway
pulling out that funny looking yellow thing
"try this" so I did you were laughing

"you got to hold it in don't blow it out"
laughed our asses off about nothing
it was always about nothing
or was it Johnny?
remember?

always wanting to drive my car until you bought a
damn dodge dart that we pushed more than drove
parked next to that mangy goat you bought
to eat the grass, too lazy to mow it
but not to smoke it
remember?

when Maureen scored that white owsly "here try this"
I did and the stars started falling from heaven
we watched the prune trees swaying
the whole orchard turned to Disneyland
remember?

the time we went to Clear Lake just because, stopped off
at the Odom's James Brown was singing
"Please Please" they were using white
**** in their arms and you said

"here try this"

I did never got so damn sick in my life
mixing it with the booze you told me
not to go heavy on
remember?

driving my chevy home had a rough time eating
shredded wheat with tarter sauce cause all
there was in that guys cabin we stayed in

you found two nice looking blonde's
and I passed up a good time
cause you said

"here try this"

I did and those little red caps knocked my ass out
waking up with a full can of beer in my hand
and she had to leave
remember?

me lying in the back seat on the black tuck covers
singing along with Dylan's "Like a rolling stone"

I said turn it up but it wasn't on the radio
I heard it all the way home coming
from the back panels while you
and that hitchhiker were
laughing your asses off
remember?

when you moved to Concord, Ca I came to live with you
asked what that smell was, you said "jasmine"
and was dropping oil on a hot lightbulb
we drank Tequila ate fried hotdogs
on a coleman stove,

you showed me how to make
sand candles
remember?

when you met Cheryl decided to get married I wasn't
the bestman cause you picked someone else
I was pissed but you never knew it

I walked all the people in and your mom "Crissy"
short and sweet I always called her "Ma"
like you did my "Ma"
remember?

when you were supposed to be looking for a job
we went up to Calistoga bought apple jack
went to that creek with the cable crossing
you fell in almost broke your damn neck
I sat on the bank laughing my ass off
remember?

the time you told Cheryl we were going fishin
so we go out drinking, screwing off
you bought that stinkin' fish
at the market

your door was locked she was working
(like you never did)

you went through the window screen
fell on your ass breaking the table
she came home for lunch
you used your charm
the stereo drowned
out the nooner
remember?

that time you were going to make big money
selling gas additive, my girlfriends engine
blew up, I always knew who was screwed
you could see a white cloud of smoke
that would cover a whole block
remember?

you showed up at my house one night
I was watching the black and white
you pulled out a bag

"try this"

I did felt pretty damn good wanted more
you said you couldn't cause
it wasn't yours
remember?

the night you called wanting to catch the wrestling
match at the Vets hall picking me up late
driving eighty on the highway
only to get in and fall on that
poor guy in the wheel chair
three times cause

you were messed up
remember?

driving you home walking you up the stairs
you fell heavy on the couch right on your
poor cat "pissing me off" that's when I
first saw you in trouble
remember?

years later riding your Harley up my driveway
straight on down from Lake Tahoe, smelling
of those little white pills you kept
swallowing by the handful
remember?

coming in and wanting a drink but I was dry
Eileen said "you ain't bringing any booze
in here"

it was cool so you bought some
meat and we fried thick burgers
on that Wedgewood stove
the way you liked em'
remember?

you wanted to stay overnight
then I heard you kick it over
in that thunderstorm

I never saw you again
remember?

my phone was screwed up
I use to wonder if you tried calling
before placing that gun to your head
plastering your brothers wall
with prescribed demons
you couldn't charm
remember?

Johnny?

I'll never know
I do know one thing
that song you hated so much

with those lyrics-

"one less bell to answer"
"one less egg to fry"

I never liked it either.

Edge,

I thought this piece was well written and haunting. Fryed eggs is a good title. I immediately had the tv visual of the eggs frying in a pan, as drugs fry brains. The repetition of "remember" was good. Although your character remembered, his friend could not. Well, at least could not learn from remembering. I feel you are saying it could be any of us, any of our friends, our loved ones. Such a downward spiral. I hung on for the ride because of your writing, but it is a sad story. Thanks for sharing.

Yea it is sad
and so damn real.
Guy had it all going
for him, a real charmer.

Vividly written piece edge. Amazing how the simple repetition of a word can produce such clear focus - which contrasts nicely with the hazy confusion produced by the hobby

I loved this, very much. It has that haunting twist of sharing things in a friendship that remain sadly funny despite a dark, bad outcome that isn't. Well written.
