the birch whispers among brethren
smudged black runes on white bark
too old to read.
oak and ash, anonymous at a distance
dogwood, redbud, mulberry understudies
asymmetric dark reachings against
a tumbling dusk.
all asleep, all await the awakening,
the searing rise of the heartwine,
the pale fire now collected cold below
the ashes of autumn's fallen fires.
patience yet thick for the quickening,
the pulse and burn missing from
a hundred turnings.
in a brown valley the white bones
of the creekside sycamore rise, dropping
for unknown brethren downstream
brittle bark messages, saying simply
I am here. still.

I like your personification here mb. I always love the feeling of nature's breath and its stillness, so this was a great read for me. I look forward to more.

oh yes, monkey boy - i have to agree with ivor (this is the most wonderful thing i've read in a long time) and with meta when she calls it thrilling. such a reverent piece!
i love the trees, and have dreams of runes written in their bark.

I can’t say much more than what’s already been said about this beautiful piece, MB. From the personification mentioned by Ivor to the assonance and alliteration,

“salt fork treeline” could serve as the poster poem for The Nature Forum.
Truly an inspiring piece.
