Suffering, in any form
is painful to see.

I watch her, dying, in pain.
The suffering is insurmountable.
I close my eyes and pretend
the world is alright.

Her steady breathing
once brought relief.
Now, it is a tormentor
keeping her from mercy.

How cruel our bodies can be,
caging us in flesh and bones,
exacting its toll,
nickel and diming us to death.

Her last breath will be a sweet song
to my heartbroken ears.

Suffering, needlessly,
is too painful for me.
