Once I caught a free bird in flight.
Pulled her down though it took all my might.
Caged her in my halls filled with despair.
Though I knew how to care.

Have you ever seen how a free bird flies,
before you pluck them from the sky.
Around and around, and oh how they sing
in perfect harmony.
Take away their freedom
their song becomes a scream,
their feathers no longer shine.
becoming barren in time.

I wish I could mend her broken wing,
teach her harmony with which to sing.
Now the damage is done,
cause she learned how to run,
so far away from me.
A fair price for never setting her free.

So,

If you ever see a free bird in flight,
let her go, though it takes all your might,
and when she sings there will be no despair,
for it’s the only way to show you really care.
Maybe if your lucky she’ll come around to sing
in perfect harmony,
in a lullaby dream.
