This is for my childhood idol (and former neighbour) Mr Adam Ant. Now diagnosed as manic depressive and regularly arrested for bizarre behaviour, I felt he could use a little cheering up. This is the third song on my new album "Listen To This When I'm Dead". Hope to post the audio when it's finished.
WHITE STRIPE
We gave our mothers quite a fright
Chalk on our faces in a stripe of white
We really must have been quite a sight
Our hero, the highwayman
We knew he lived somewhere nearby
We scoured the map in a lay-by
But he left town and now I cry
For my hero, the highwayman
A mirrored room with mirrored walls
A mirrored ceiling and a mirrored floor
Where he seduced Amanda Donahoe
With cheekbones sharp and beautiful
He taught me so much as a boy
Seven inches of vinyl could bring such joy
Lipstick became my favourite toy
The singer on the stage
He's fallen now from dizzy heights
Forgotten by the harsh spotlights
The black dog hounds his darkest nights
A singer with no stage
A mirrored room with mirrored walls
A mirrored ceiling and a mirrored floor
I dream of Amanda Donahoe
And other delights that I’ll never know
Punk and pirate, dandy and brave
Haunted from the cradle to the grave
A soul I wish that I could save
So pretty but so lost
Again I play those greatest hits
Before the beards and legal writs
Somewhere my hero, silent sits
Less pretty but still lost
A mirrored room with mirrored walls
A mirrored ceiling and a mirrored floor
Where he seduced Amanda Donahoe
With cheekbones sharp and beautiful
A mirrored room with mirrored walls
A mirrored ceiling and a mirrored floor
I dream of Amanda Donahoe
And other delights that I’ll never know
