A battlefield of trees, is it? This is the beginning – like cracking knuckles I step over splintered spines and fibulas. I am careful not to fall victim to their insincerities. And every time we kiss, the dirt sticks to your top lip. You know, I watched you shave, early Monday morning with my feet walking towards the ceiling, the tips of my hair grazing the light blue carpet. And as the blood rushes to my brain, from this upside down angle, you laugh and I laugh, we both agree our song has been written.

“Maybe it’s okay that your hands shake, perhaps your bones are just dancing.”

Nah, they are just happy to see you.

Besides, I am terrified for other reasons. Like how windshield wipers fight and swipe at each other in the perfect rhythmic unison dancers work for their whole lives. And how I choose to get onto a train every morning, the green mechanical worms, spitting out people and then swallowing them whole again. We jump like fleas from building to building, bed to bed, with no final destination in mind.

The dust begins to rise as I jump up and down on the mattress chanting, "Watch me! Watch me!" as if it could be substituted for, "Love me! Love me!" Grabbing hold of my ankle, he pulls me back down and says, "Stop..."

"This is where you belong."

I loved it, as always.
