Firecracker

Jagged broken glass words
thorny caresses from cold arms
hollow locked eye stares.

Without physical motion
your spirit slipped out the door
as we all stood
in that tiny room
insipid and monotonous.

Back and forth
back and forth
i'd paced that room
(measuring about 11 foot x 9)
for what must've been miles.
Funny, you always told me i needed the excercise.

Our Protestant lips silent
for longer than any time i've known.
When not pacing
we just stood.
We just waited.

Your grace, regal though quietly unassuming
danced in my memory as i watched you
asleep with all your Celtic pride.

Through the hours
i traced every line on your face
noticed more about you in that half day nightmare
than i'd cared to see before.

When you left
it was sudden.
The pain ran away afraid
it couldn't hurt you anymore
-no, not you-
you were always far too strong.

Now i struggle to find tears
I don't know why.
I've prayed for them
to cleanse my lily cheeks
as their saltiness would sting my eyes
but there's just nothing.

Believe me
my heart hasn't stopped crying yet.

All the life i will lead
will mould itself
around the shape of you.

I believe, iblieve is right. What a great usage of words to craft perfectly around your imagery! Great write! and.. we must not lay our life in the past, but always remember ...Marji
