Rightful prey

This is the moment when the barn owl flies
on feathered wings that whisper in the dark
and searches with its night adapted eyes
across the open spaces of the park.
It hunts the tiny creatures of the night
on feathered wings that whisper in the dark
It’s hunt unhampered by the lack of light
It swoops suddenly to catch its prey.
Undoubtedly the monarch of the night
The wary barn owl sleeps throughout the day
in the safety of its hidden nest.
Above the church where people go to pray
I think the barn owl must prey the best
his prayers are answered every single night
When darkness falls at Gods behest
he has to satisfy his appetite
His prayers are answered every single night.
This is the moment when the barn owl flies
on feathered wings that whisper in the dark.

Ivor!

There is this lovely owl that has been hanging out near the river by my house. Right at dusk you can hear the call. It's like nothing else, shining so clear. They are really amazing creatures to watch them fly through trees is like nothing else.

thank you for sharing your work - nice pun.

Piers, I admire your initiative. This form is quite challenging and you certainly show that you’re up to the task.

I hope that you don’t mind, but I’d like to make one suggestion. You may want to look at the rhyme scheme in the ending quatrain. Merely a friendly heads up, that’s all.

I really like the symbolic irony of “prey” and “pray” in the above passage. The “monarch” metaphor is very strong as well.

Ivor, you fill this piece with a plethora of poetic devices. Somehow, while you must have worked extremely hard to get this form to work so well while not forgetting those other poetic devices, you also bring the reader inside the mind of an owl on the hunt.

“Rightful prey” deserves the admiration of anyone and everyone who is serious about honing his or her poetic skills. Nicely done. http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/otn/wink/thumb.gif
