The best Christmas gift I ever received
was neither big nor small;
The best Christmas gift I ever received
was neither short nor tall.

The best Christmas gift I ever received
was neither new nor old.
The best Christmas gift I ever received
wasn't silver or gold.

The best Christmas gift I ever received
was the treasure of life --
for every moment that passes us by
is the most precious time.

I know, it's kind of cheesy, but it was written after I survived a fire that my housemate set to commit suicide right before Christmas this year. I had the first verse in my head for a week, but it took a couple of weeks to get the rest down. I have a few other poems that I wrote shortly after that also. Writing poetry helped me cope a great deal.

Writing is a good way of coping with trauma. This is a simple poem, yet it carries an important message - one that is all too easy to forget.

Thanks for sharing.

You're absolutely correct. I wrote a lot of poetry after that, as well as journal entries. Writing definitely helps with the healing process.
