“Hey Red, Boss wants to see you. Again. Says he has a special assignment”
Looking up, I see Mikey standing there, with this smirk pasted on his face.

All I can think is “what now”, last time Mikey told me the Boss wanted to see me
I got fried on that assignment. Took me months to recover. He can be such an ass!

Hearing my name over the inter-office, I head to the Boss’s office.
As usual he’s overseeing the shop floor. Muttering under his breath.
Overhearing a few of the words, I realize it’s been a while since he said that.
Without turning he says “Red, come here. Take a look. What do you see?”

As I look out, I see the same as always, a major pissin’ contest.
The my dick is bigger than your dick scenarios.
Shaking my head I think out loud “they never learn, do they?”
“You sending Ari and Uri in to take care of that lot?”
He nods yes and continues to observe the commotion.

“Mikey said you wanted to see me. Something about a special job.”

The Boss just stood there, watching me watch him.
A bearded white haired, pony-tailed Old fart with wicked blue eyes
that tell me he heard that thought of what he could do with this one.

“Red, I was looking through your personnel file today. You’ve had some
pretty hard assignments the past few years. Burnt at the stake six times,
drowned four, assorted poisonings, murders, one drawn and quartering.”

Raising my eyebrows and peering at him over my glasses conveys
the I already know this, so get to the point please.

“I’m sending you back as a plain ordinary human. No magic.
No ability to perform miracles. You’ll work behind the scenes.
Unobserved, blending in, unseen and before you say anything,
I want your word-bond to keep this secret. No complaining.
To anyone.”

Oh blast it all, he has that do my bidding Moses tone in his voice.
After I give the old man my word-bond, he continues on with the briefing.
I’m to go about day-to-day living, just be there and wait.
I will listen and should a crisis become apparent, I can call on healing.

I am up out of that chair so fast, it tips over. “No way! No flipping’ way!
You know what happened the last time you sent someone who could heal.
They nailed him to a cross!”

“Why me? Can you please tell me that?”

With a heavy exhalation of breath, he raises his head and grabs my gaze.
“Red, of all my workers, you get the job done. No matter what the circumstance.
I’m sending you down with Spirit healing. Flesh is simple to do.
Heart and Mind are a little more complicated. Spirit healing is the most difficult.
If a person’s spirit is damaged, no matter how hard they try with the other three, they are lost.”

“ Raphaella, I wouldn’t ask you to go, but they need you down there. Please.”

It was the please that did it. He only asked one other time and the pain it caused was so great, the sun went dark for three hours.

“Okay, when do I leave?” and the next thing I know is I’m getting my butt smacked.

He owes me for this one. Just wait.

Red, this is delightful! You write fantasy like a dream. Yes, I'd highly recommend both Vonnegut and Heinlein. Check out Heinlein's "Job: A comedy of errors." Also check out,"Unquenchable Fire," by a woman authors whose name I forget. You write in the true spirit of these masters.
