the cat'lics
in their deep depression
spent

in lent

their best confessions made

obeyed their fasts and stayed at home
prayed
and played at be'n pious;

bar rooms filled
and pubs devoid of all that jesus -

freak'dazoid!

march hares merry
in the green
dashed their hallowed irish e'en on the ward!

(the ward refers to adele and surrounding streets - st thomas, st andrew, josephine and tchoupitoulas - which lie in what used to be called the irish channel in new orleans, now a federal housing project and all these words imply, no longer inhabited by the irish save for one or two die-hard families amidst a strictly negro population!)

Definitely one to be read out loud, with the repetitive rhyme assisting the flow. Appropriate for St Pat's! I like this. :)

It sounds like what Surrey Hills used to be like.

Very good.

oh, this is fabulous on so many ways and resonates all the way back to six o'clock mass on the sundays of my youth...

Great read! I like it best aloud.
