what lay ahead
bringing tears to the bed

as dreams fled my eyes
and the sun rushed to rise
to what could be
his last bright
occasion?

cruel words pummeled nerves
the near-first to be heard,

question blown from the brain now
and slain with a rain of statistics
in loud detonation;

"we're on the verge'
of annihilation"

a radio station wailed too plain.

p.s. i put this doleful piece in nature poetry because the first thing i thought when i heard these hateful words was - our beautiful planet! our mother! what have we done!

this is a real event. for two days i woke up in the morning with tears falling down my face. i searched my dreams and searched my waking life, and on day three there was the answer. a dr. helen caldicott was on the air giving some unbelievable facts and statistics on the nuclear situation of the world today. and truly, we are on the verge of annihilation. my life is ever changed from hearing those words because this is the first time that it occurs as a real possibility to me given the facts dr. caldicott conveyed.

laleesh, I don’t mean to sound flippant, but before I knew what this was about, when my eyes first met it, I thought, “Jeeze, this is an epic for her.”

However, the piece soon took care of my humorous mood.

The personified sun gives the piece the urgency it deserves. “Rushing to rise”, as if its days are numbered. And, although, in fact, its days may not be numbered, I fear, as you do, that the days during which we will have the pleasure of seeing it may be.

What have we done? A lot. And, judging from what we have done, we can be rather certain that the hatred that blankets “our mother” will eventually kill her.

You wrote this from a place very deep within yourself, laleesh. I could feel it as I read.

Powerfully sad and all too well expressed.

yes, michael you are right on target about where i wrote this one from; and if i cried two days before i got the "news", you should see what happened after!

and the killing part is that i want to share this with my loved ones, my children and grandchildren, so that they might have a deep appreciation, a reverence for life! but on the other hand, i don't want to frighten them, or plant any seeds of hopelessness.

i can only repeat myself (over and over); what have we done? what have we done?
