View Full Version : three sisters

sisters under the seasonless sun
shading the house with half-moon shutters
tower together in step to the west
arms entwined, pale limbs freckled
or bone white on high, down
at the sidewalk speckled.
turn me now each day down that lane
when the sun's fire wanes and falls
towards the western waters - small
wonder the piles of raiment shed -
the sisters aglow in the sunfall light.
sycamores under the seasonless sun
over the house with half-moon shutters
burning and beaming in naked glory
living together in step to the west.

mb, i don't know what variety of sycamore you have in your vicinity and wonder if what is happening to them is the same as what's happening to ours here in the coastal regions at this time. what this is is they are shedding huge sheets of their lovely gray-white silvery bark so that the grounds look littered with thousands of sheets of paper or something. a strange, almost eerie but quite beautiful site to behold! yes, especially in the moonlight!
they seem so animated, like they are flinging off their clothes to bask in the great lights!

If I didn't know better, I'd think you've been making the rounds in
Oregon...
as usual, another beauty... thank you.

Same tree - the shedding of bark is quite wonderful is it not? Perfect parchment for a lover's note in the moonlight :)

Indeed, they seem to give off their own light. They are a beacon in winter's brown forest...

Meta No further west than McKinley Avenue, I'm afraid. :) I hear you have trees out there no poem can capture. thanks, Meta.

actually, there is a group of three mountains in central oregon called "three sisters" and they have sycamore trees in that area... I saw this area of
Oregon in your poem...
pretty cool.

It's nice to find the triple goddess
so close to home
they strike me as more Grace than Graeae (there's a diphthong for ya)
the parallel structure of the first and last stanza was very satisfying

and Grace they shall be. I'll let them know when next I walk under them :)
