View Full Version : Nest
Beside the woodpile, a packrat shows
his backside to me. Everywhere the rain is falling.
It’s like that this time of year. In the distance,
the gentle slope of the woods disappear
beyond the ridge. The trees touch a swollen
gray sky. Today is my birthday, tomorrow
is Christmas. Soon the calendar will change.
The packrat shakes the water from his coat,
and squeezes between two logs. All creatures
nest. I walk to the house, carrying an armload
of wood. Shake the water from my raincoat.
The similarities are uncanny as I enter my nest.

Man, I really feel out of touch.
Are you sure tomorrow is Christmas, Mac?
Oh, well, happy Christmas and merry birthday, Mac.
This piece is a wonderful depiction, a wonderful narrative of microcosms within the great macrocosm. And, quite frankly, we don’t even know how great it is.
Who knows, maybe on some distant plant in some distant galaxy, a phrijamamin is gathering its pwintels and taking them to its nest as well.
I’m going to make one suggestion. I wouldn’t try this with too many people, but I know that you’re a person who welcomes input and I don’t think this will upset you.
You do a wonderful job of depicting the similarities between you and the pack rat. It’s beautifully written. Consequently, in my ever so humble opinion, the twelfth line, “The similarities are uncanny as I enter my nest”, in some ways removes the extended metaphor. It explains what you’ve said so well poetically.
That’s just one short old guy’s opinion. If you kept it as is, it would continue to work well.
Just tryin’ to help.
Thanks Michael, appreciate the suggestion.
