I am in nature’s awe when falling leaves
Lay a scattered carpet of rustled pile
Oft scurrying nowhere as wind deceives
A quickening blow then soft in beguile.
Then more, in rustic and majestic float
Take no more suckle from mothering tree
Taking their leave in brown’s full-fed coat
Tear stems away in a natural maturity
Still, like rain, they floor, gently in drop
Kissing each other in their tumbled fall
And sibling leaves cushion the hard stop
Scare-crow branches wear no clothes at all
All brittle their bones now in vein relief
Sighing to wind, does a naked forest grieve
I see them dying and full share the grief
As I tread my way home among the sad leaves.
Lay a scattered carpet of rustled pile
Oft scurrying nowhere as wind deceives
A quickening blow then soft in beguile.
Then more, in rustic and majestic float
Take no more suckle from mothering tree
Taking their leave in brown’s full-fed coat
Tear stems away in a natural maturity
Still, like rain, they floor, gently in drop
Kissing each other in their tumbled fall
And sibling leaves cushion the hard stop
Scare-crow branches wear no clothes at all
All brittle their bones now in vein relief
Sighing to wind, does a naked forest grieve
I see them dying and full share the grief
As I tread my way home among the sad leaves.
