It is not an alarm clock
but ruby branches that wake her this day
and the winter lemon limbs that lick her face
like sunshine.

How long has it been since she had taken notice
of the emeralds lying beneath the rain drops
or that, even while the sky lingered in her graying sheets,
morning rose from the Oregon earth.

I am retired now and no longer ruled by the clock I sleep when I am tired eat when I am hungry as naturre intended
