As I sip my coffee
I recall
my chance meeting
with her
not sure
who surprised who
she is as interested
in me
as I am in her
for different reasons
we are in different phases of life
she, in the nesting mode
I, in the empty nest years

she studies me from afar
never taking her eyes
off me
I watch her coyly
not wanting her to know
I am aware of her presence
and yet
I am struck by
her incredible, flawless, beauty
so young, so natural
so full of life
and curious
there are parts of her
that remind me of myself
years ago

she had her choice of mates
or perhaps it would be fair
to say
he chose her
at this stage
it matters not
what matters is that they
are mated together
and I am now alone

She moves slowly, ever closer
again, I am struck
by her natural beauty
her mere presence turns heads
I make direct eye contact
she is well aware
I could never hurt her.
but still, I don't speak
nor move
she glides by me
shards of gold dangling
to add yet another
strand to her nest.

(yes, it was a robin, one of my favs)

Very Enjoyable - nice to read you again. I liked the way this one teased my mind into imagining quite a different scene than the one unfolding in the end. Terrific.
