Something incredibly wonderful happened today. I was checking out at Walmart with an African American cashier. She struck up a conversation with me about the herring dipped in tomato hot sauce I was buying. Then as I was paying my credit card wouldn't work. So I told her to take out about a third of the items. She appeared to do so. I told her I needed to get the purchase below $20 to use my other card. She offered to cover the difference to get it below $20. I paid for the items with the other...

A friend of mine works in a local Catholic infants/junior school. She told us about a five year old from one of our less salubrious areas who had just started school. He was quiet the first morning, but in the afternoon he raised his hand to speak.
“Yes Jack?” asked the teacher

Surgeries

April 9th, 2012
I had surgery on my left foot.
they needed to remove a bone spur that was starting to cut into my tendon.
I was doing fine then on May 14, 2012 I had to go back into the hospital for a second surgery on my foot.
it was not closing right. spent 5 days in the hospital and now I am doing great.
Today is October 23, 2012 and I am weight baring, walking without the aid of a can or crutches. I am doing much better. I am also going through a divorce....

Tax and the UK - grumpy blog of the day

A glorious piece of news that I heard when holidaying in Crete recently was that Lord Fink, the Tory party treasurer wants the UK to be more like a tax haven, in order to attract tax phobic millionaires to our shores, and to ensure that our home bred millionaires won't invest their wealth in nebulous offshore tax havens, but would be allowed to keep it in the UK, where it would still pile up low or nil tax dividends whilst contributing zilch to the economy.

Per my usual MO, I sent out an electronic copy of my most recent shelf stability study to the principal signers before getting Document Control involved, including my usual exhortation to get their ya-ya's out before the hardcopy started circulating.
