Emergency Room Drama

Mom had two trips to the emergency room last month. The first was due to swelling in her legs. She has congestive heart problems so this was potentially serious. The charming woman doctor doubled her fluid medicines and sent her home after a few hours. The doctor wanted to know why my mother didn't see her regular doctor for this. Mom replied that she like the emergency room better. I took her home and she followed up with her physician. A kidney function check had been recommended by the emergency...

5 degrees F short of embarrassment

Well into my third week out of hospital now, on diuretics and beta blockers for heart failure. Feeling rather better now, with reduced fluid on my lungs, and about fifteen pounds lighter.

Last night was my first party outing since my hospitalisation. It was my brother-in-law's 60th birthday celebration, and was held at The Owl - his local pub. Joyce and I dressed well for the occasion (Joyce by her standards, and I by mine, which I refuse to raise for anyone!)

Many years ago I had to travel by bus to the bank in the another township, as our village didn't have a bank. I took Paul, our son, then aged four with me. He was curious as to why we were going to the bank.

“To draw some money out,” I explained.

“Don't you get your own money from your work?” he asked.

“Yes,” I replied, “but it gets paid into the bank, which then looks after my money. I call into the bank and get money when I need it.”...

There is an Open Discussions thread ('Bystanders') which hit a nerve with me yesterday. I hoped that I had managed to keep my objectivity on the topic, because the post was certainly difficult to write due to some old memories.

I live in a country where I can be frequently targeted for my race, especially around election year. Strangely, this, more than anything else reminds me of what the colour of my skin is, or where I don't belong in a country that still calls itself bi-cultural,...
