We've had good weather for watching TV in recent weeks, so I've seen a fair bit of the Olympic Games from Beijing.

Very impressive stuff, especially the opening and closing ceremonies, if you can cope with watching human beings behave like ants. Spectacular games, and some spectacular performances, especially Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt, though the UK's Chris Hoy did pretty well at the indoor cycling.

Flawless organisation demonstrated what a communist society can achieve. Many folk kicked out of their homes to provide building space - but then there's plenty of commercial organisations in our capitalist society prepared to behave like this too.

A hard act to follow? This is the question lots of us Brits are asking, as we'll be footing the bill (sweetened to some extent by the fact that permanent facilities and long-term development opportunities will help a run-down locality to prosper.) I'm afraid that Jacque Rogge, the president of the Olympic committee is irritating me, and no doubt many others, by his expectations that we'll spend more money than budgeted to make a good comparison with what China has achieved. What arrogance! Who elected him to make these decisions on the British tax-payer's behalf? And then he says that the main quality demanded of those who make these decisions will be that of humility! Humility? to submit to his arrogance?

Sorry if this has become a bit of a rant. Not what I intend my blog for at all. I'll try to recover my composure for future entries.

LOL, Tony. I would rant too.

I don't have a television but kinda wish I had seen some of the Chinese Olympics. Probably as close as I will ever get to China.

"...if you can cope with watching human beings behave like ants." That's exactly what we thought when we saw it also! LOL

Jacque Rogge can want what he wants .. who cares, it won't matter. You Brit's have always done your own thing. My bet is that in the end it'll be refreshingly original and within budget as well!
