Ban on AOL

Currently there is a complete ban on any registrations from AOL email addresses. This is solely because of repeated false spam complaints against our site due to AOL's shoddy email practices.

AOL's system allows their members to flag emails in their inbox as spam via a report button. People occasionally report genuine emails as spam either accidentally or maliciously. That's not unusual. However the problem is AOL's has taken a policy of not even attempting (either via automated or even manually solutions) to confirm such reports to weed out false reports and instead merely send a spam complaint for each instance to either the party who sent the email or that party's webhost. After enough spam complaints are racked up (in the 4-5 range as I've heard) with AOL, even if are false ones, their system automatically blocks that site's server from sending any emails to their members (known as blacklisting). So in the end a website has to waste a great deal of time defending their email practices and proving they aren't spamming to their webhost (most of which have strong policies against such and is grounds for termination usually) and then AOL if they are blacklisted.

ArcanumCafe.com isn't a spammer and we actively work very hard to prevent spam we receive or that could conceivably be sent via our site. So repeated false accusations wasting our time has become to much to deal with currently. So we've effectively banned AOL for these reasons for the time being. Our recommendation to those who use an AOL email address (whether current members or those attempting to register) is to utilize a free email provider such as Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail, etc. We also suggest complaining to AOL about their shoddy email 'report as spam' practices such as this and their longstanding problem of not following or even using standard RFC email protocols, which often results in bounced and lost emails on their part.

We apologize for any confusion or inconvenience this may cause you. I hope it doesn't deter you from joining our community.
