So I've been bitching here about my job for a while now. Resolution has finally been reached.

I was laid off today.

I'm still in a bit of shock, but I spent the afternoon talking with my financial advisors, and while they seem to feel that if I want to look for work, fine - they also feel that I have more than enough stashed away to retire now.

I'm 64+, and can't retire with full Social Security benefits until I'm 66. But I'm getting 6 months severance - that'll

This has been an expen$ive year. Three weeks after buying a $1000 inspection sticker for my car (wheel bearing, 2 new tires, headlight assembly, and sundries, plus labor), I flew to San Francisco for my daughter's graduation from Berkeley (another $2000 in all). Some while back, I'd posted a blog about things mathematical, and in particular about a curious property I'd stumbled across involving the Golden Ratio. I was amazed and baffled by how any two numbers used to seed a Fibonacci sequence appeared to generate the same ratio.

Well, a recent upload at one of my favorite YouTube channels offers an explanation! There's a bit of handwaving insofar as use of the "=" sign is concerned, but as the numbers get larger and larger, differences...

I came upon this curious sight while hiking a rail-trail today:

Attachment 114

Surrounded by toys and various offerings, it's a large granite stone of recent vintage bearing the names of 6 children, aged 6 months to 9 years, who all apparently died on the same date, March 21, 1901. My first guess was that they'd perished in a fire.

However, the other side of the stone bore an even more awful story, to wit:

"Elizabeth Ann Craig...

I was awakened at 4:00 am a few nights ago by the sound of a wild creature rustling amongst my personal effects.

At first I wasn't sure if I'd really heard it; or if I had, if the sound might be coming from outside. (The bedroom windows were wide open.) When a soft *clink* clearly came from my dresser, I knew I had something to deal with.

A mouse, I first assumed; but the sounds were moving around the room too quickly. Mice move fast, but not fast enough to cross the
