The Eden Express by Mark Vonnegut
This was written by the son of the well known novelist Kurt Vonnegut. The book is an amazing autobiographical account of experiencing the sixties in a state of madness. After graduating from college, Mark drops out to live in a commune in British Columbia. While there he slips into a state of madness and gets diagnosed with schizophrenia. The book is funny, bizzare, and a good natured trip through Mark's head. He illustrates the looseness of thinking of schizophrenia, making a little clearer the murky logic of psychosis in a humorous way.
The book is as much an account of the sixties as of a trip through madness. His conversations with the voices in his head are out of this world fun to read. And the wild free loving world of the sixties makes a wonderful setting for a romp with insanity.
The appendix contains a letter he wrote to a young woman friend whom he thought may have been experiencing schizophrenia. Mark is such a good natured and pleasant fellow that his book is a joy to read.
Mark is now a pediatrician and artist in Manhattan.
